For those who want something different to an axe, there are many questions surrounding log splitters as people are not so familiar. Here at
World of Power we will take you through the basics giving you the knowledge you need to make an informed decision.
What is a log splitter & how does it work?
A
log splitter is a mechanical device which uses hydraulics to drive logs against a metal wedge splitting them quickly and easily to make smaller logs for the fire. In effect it’s like an axe but without the back breaking work which is involved when using man power and an axe.
How Safe is a Log Splitter?
As with all machinery, log splitters should be treated with respect – if you use the tool correctly to manufacturing guidelines and with appropriate care then they are perfectly safe.
The wedge used to split the wood inside the log splitter is not sharp, it’s the pressure and the wedge which causes the logs to split.
Log splitters are fitted with safety features to keep the user safe whilst using this machinery. Work gloves and goggles are a must when working with log splitters to protect against splinters.
What type of wood can I split?
When looking at log splitters, you will find the word ‘tonnage’ is an important one. Tonnage is the measurement of pressure; this is used to gauge the amount of pressure each log splitter can exert. The higher the tonnage the harder, thicker wood you can split.
In theory you can split any type of wood using a
log splitter but ideally you want to work with wood that is appropriate for domestic fires and log burners to ensure you keep warm during the cold snaps.
Ash, birch and beech are easy to split, cedar and elm burn well. Pine tends to spit but is plentiful and one of the easiest woods around to split. There are many more types of wood which are ideal for splitting and using for firewood.
What size logs can I split?
This will depend on the log splitter, the tonnage and the wood. If you plan on splitting smaller branches of up to 25cm in diameter and up to 52cm in length, a
5 ton electrical horizontal log splitter or
7 ton splitter will do the job.
If you’re planning on tacking larger pieces which are up to 60cm in diameter then you need something around the 25 ton mark.
